$3.4 million grant enables Clemson University to lead the creation of Black Heritage Trail

A grant from the Mellon Foundation will preserve Black history at Clemson University and in the cities of Clemson and Seneca.

A $3,445,000 grant from the  Mellon Foundation’s Monuments Project has been awarded to Clemson University to support the creation of a Black Heritage Trail on campus and in the cities of Seneca and Clemson. The Black Heritage Trail will feature walking trails that connect heritage sites with interactive signs, artwork and digital content that share the stories of local Black history and South Carolina historical markers at significant historic sites.

    Clemson University has received a $3,445,000 grant to create a Black Heritage Trail on campus and in the neighboring cities of Clemson and Seneca. It will tell stories and explain the history of African Americans in the Upstate, according to Rhondda Thomas, the Calhoun Lemon Professor of Literature at Clemson University.

  • Seneca Faith Cabin project moving forward after delays

    A piece of local African American history is coming back to life in a collaboration between the city of Seneca and a Clemson University official with a love for restoration.

    The Faith Cabin Library in Seneca was part of a project that included a little more than 100 small buildings built as libraries in the Midlands and Upstate of South Carolina and northwest Georgia. Founder Willie Lee Buffington of Saluda built the first one in his hometown, according to Shelby Henderson, executive director of the Seneca Arts, History and Culture Department, and city museums director Nick McKinney.

  • Seneca officials see final Storybook Trail Park concept

    SENECA — With a final concept design complete, Seneca city officials expect initial work to begin soon on the Storybook Trail Park that will be next to the Seneca library.

    City administrator Scott Moulder presented renderings of the final concept to city council at its meeting last month. The concept was completed by Morgan Sisk, a junior landscape architecture major at Clemson University.

  • State budget includes $10M to create fine arts center downtown

    SENECA — Seneca city and state officials are working to bring a long-vacant downtown building to life and create a new 700-plus-seat venue that would be home to a variety of events.

    The proposed South Carolina General Assembly budget includes $10 million for the city of Seneca designated as “Seneca Event Center” from statewide revenue in the 2022-23 Appropriation Act approved by lawmakers earlier this month.
